Welcome to my blog. My name is Joe Cheng and I’m a developer at a Boston-area software startup. I was previously a developer on Windows Live Writer, the free (and super great!) blog editor from Microsoft.

I am not Joe Cheng, the famous Taiwanese actor and model. I am Joe Cheng, the obscure Chinese-American programmer and nerd.

Before joining Microsoft I worked for a variety of Boston-area startups, including Onfolio, Upromise, Visible Markets, and Allaire Corp. (I also worked at a bunch of others, but those are the ones I spent at least a year of my life on.)

From 1996 to 2001 I maintained a website for Photoshop enthusiasts called the Action XChange. (The only reason I mention this is because I still get the occasional e-mail saying, “I stumbled on your blog, are you that Joe Cheng…?”)

I have had an almost unhealthy obsession with computers since I was five years old, and an entirely unhealthy obsession with programming since college. Luckily there seem to be a lot of people out there who are kind or foolish enough to pay me to do what I love.

I have spent multiple years of my life working full-time with: C# (client-side only), Java, ColdFusion, HTML/JS/etc. I have used the following for at least a few decent-sized projects: Ruby (with and without Rails), C++. I have dabbled in, for fun: Lisp, Python, now Haskell.

I’m on LinkedIn. Feel free to add me if we’ve worked, studied, played, or prayed together in the past.

If you’re having problems with Windows Live Writer and are looking for help, a much better way to reach me is via the support forum.

Hey, your lanmp3 program is awesome!! Simple and great, way better than another client/server app I tried for streaming mp3s.

I can’t believe it was released YEARS ago. Thanks for the great app.

  6. Hey Joe, Thanks for that information about future posts..That really is an incredible feature…:-)

  7. Hi there Joe,

Random question… I was googling ‘Cartier Declaration Ring’ and came across your enagement story. Well done!

I also noticed the picture of the engagement ring is really different to what’s on the Cartier website.

Do you have any idea what the full description of the ring is and where about you got it from. It very well may be that it’s not available anymore.

Anyhow, I’m trying to get a hold of a ring like that so any info would be a lot of help!

    Dear Joe,
I have a little problem on my live writer. Could you tell me how to keep the font I want to use everytime I open your program? Nowadays I must change manually the font from trebouchet to arial every post I want to write. I’m quite bored about this because I use writer every day for my personal diary.
Thank you and happy holidays and new year

    Hello Joe,
Sorry to bother you sbout an old program of yours: Onfolio. Yeah…it’s a headache…and i am trying to move out of it. My problem is my largest and most important collection seems to have been corrupted. I keep getting a “not a valid Onfolio collection file.” Yes, it was!
Anyhow, I tried with cfs2xml and got a JIT error. I am not a techy or a programmer and this is really depressing.
Is there any way you can help me please? Or suggest someone who could recover my file?

    Re:Windows Live writer,

Joe could you please post a fix on the microsoft help&support site for resolving the uninstall problem with this program that gives this error
“This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package”.
Also when you try to download and re-install this program it completes the setup and then promptly turns back and uninstalls it leaving you with the original problem????????

This last problem also occurs with any installation of the Windows Live programs such as Messenger, Mail, etc.

  17. Do you have any more examples, or has anyone submitted templates they use with the Dynamic Template plug-in with Windows Live Writer? I know it can do more, but I don’t know the language to write in… If I had some examples, I believe I could figure it out; to do better things.

    I appreciate it…
