Where to find your Windows Live Writer log file
If a member of the Windows Live Writer team ever asks you to e-mail your log file to us, here’s how you can find it. The filename is “Windows Live Writer.log” and you can find it using one of the following two options.
Beta 3 and later:
In the Help | About Windows Live Writer dialog, click the “show log file” link.
Beta 2 and earlier (also works for Beta 3 and later if you can’t get to the Help menu):
Open the folder it lives in by copying one of the following values and pasting it into your Start | Run box.
Under Windows XP:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Windows Live Writer\
Under Windows Vista:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Windows Live Writer\
For example, on Vista:

Neat. Thanks for the tip. Funny to read some of the comments in that actual log file about IE’s error message handling.
For the record, I truly appreciate your responsiveness with regards to statements about WLW’s performance.
Thank you for the information. Finding out how to become a better Windows Live Writer user sounds good to me. I enjoy using it, but I would like to avoid struggling unnecessarily with issues that are beyond my level and experience.
Joe, thanks for the tip.
I create backup images of each of the six drives on my primary computer twice daily. For some utilities and tools, though, including Windows live Writer, I also like to create specific backups for certain tools and utilities, including all the directory paths. That way, should something go wrong, I can roll back to a stable version and know all will be well.
As for the posts, they are backed up at least daily using a tool by ScottIsAFool, called WLWbackup, I believe, and saved to an archive of their own.
